Piano Lessons
 

Dan has taught students of many ages, from 6 to 70.  Some students receive classical training, while others concentrate on jazz and blues, with an emphasis on improvising.  The stylistic focus of the lessons depends on the talents and interests of the student.

Lesson Location:  Lessons are given at Dan's home studio in Maplewood, N.J.

Makeup Policy:

  • Students pay during the first week of the month for that month.All missed lessons with advanced notice will be made up at a mutually convenient time.
    There is, however, A MAXIMUM OF 5 MAKEUPS PER STUDENT for the school year. Any missed lessons beyond that will not be made up and not refunded.
  • Lessons missed without advance notice will not be made up and not refunded, unless this happens due to unavoidable circumstances.

(top)Tuning Policy:

Students or their parents are required to keep their piano IN TUNE.  Regardless of how nice a piano may look, it may still be badly out of tune.  The piano student who hears only out of tune notes will have a much harder time developing a good musical ear.  If you need a tuner, Dan can recommend someone to you.

Teaching Background:

Dan Crisci, music educator, studied classical piano at Westminster Choir College Conservatory Division, jazz piano with Keith MacDonald, Dave Braham, and JoAnne Brackeen, and jazz ensemble with Chris White at Montclair State College in New Jersey.  He received a B.S. in Mathematics from Montclair State College, and is a graduate of the Certificate Program in Piano Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.Dan has been teaching piano lessons since 1986.  In 1991, he participated in a Kindermusik Teacher Training Workshop at Westminster Choir College.  In 1992 and 1993, Dan taught Kindermusik at Apple B's Day Care Center in Warren, NJ.  From 1998 to 2003, he was the Children's Music Director for the Springfield Emmanuel United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School.  Currently, Dan and his wife, Virginia Johnston, are co-ministers of music at SEUMC.Dan has presented workshops on Jazz Appreciation and Education in 1996 for the Music Educators Association (MEA) and in 1997 for the Shore Music Educators Association.  In 2000, he developed and presented a hands-on program for the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey called Improvise, in which children experienced the art of jazz and blues improvisation.

Dan is a member of the Music Educators Association (MEA) and has been able to have some of this students participate in the MEA's auditions and competitions.  His students have many opportunities to perform in recitals throughout the year.
